Field Service Engineer

Decent Flexibility, But Demanding Travel
Pros: Being a Field Service Engineer for PerkinElmer in the life sciences industry, I had a good amount of autonomy. I could often plan my travel and schedule my work from my home office remote from Dallas, TX when I wasn't at a customer site. This flexibility was key for managing personal appointments and family time.
Cons: The travel demands are intense, though. You're constantly on call, and some weeks are 50+ hours fixing equipment. It's tough on family life when you're always on the road for medical diagnostics installations or emergency repairs, often with short notice. There isn't much down time between projects.
Advice to Management: Try to staff more local Field Service Engineers to reduce extensive travel for individual contributors. Also, review on-call rotations to lessen the burden on individual engineers. Better planning could reduce last-minute travel requests.

Decent flexibility for field work, but it's demanding.
Pros: I get a good amount of autonomy as a Field Service Engineer. I can often set my own schedule for client visits, which is great for work flexibility. Being remote helps a lot too.
Cons: Even with remote work, there's huge pressure to hit service targets. The travel across the US East Coast can get really heavy, making true work-life balance tough. It sometimes feels like an on-call job for critical lab equipment.
Advice to Management: Try to balance customer demands with engineer availability to prevent burnout. More local support could help reduce extensive travel for Field Service Engineers working on analytical instruments.

Research Scientist

Decent pay, but work flexibility is a struggle
Pros: I've worked with some really smart people in R&D. The benefits are solid, and for a big corporate company in life science, job security is pretty good. There's some decent equipment for research projects in the Waltham, MA office.
Cons: Work flexibility is tough, especially as a Research Scientist. For lab-based roles, there's no real WFH, which is expected, but even for office work, hybrid options are super limited. It's mostly onsite, even when it feels unnecessary. Can't just pop out for an appointment easily.
Advice to Management: Seriously re-evaluate the WFH and hybrid policies. For roles that don't require constant lab presence, offer more flexibility. Trust your employees more.
