Career Growth Can Be Tough Here
Pros: I got to work on some cool flash memory projects as a Firmware Engineer. It's a big tech company so there are lots of resources for learning new skills in the semiconductor industry. You can definitely learn a lot if you seek it out.
Cons: Promotions are slow; it's hard to move up without leaving. There isn't much formal mentorship for career progression. You often feel stuck in your role, especially for individual contributor paths in the San Jose office.
Advice to Management: Create clearer promotion paths for experienced engineers. Invest more in formal mentorship programs to help employees grow within the company, not just on specific projects.

Leadership has its moments, but needs work
Pros: The engineering teams here are truly smart and dedicated. There's good access to resources for a big tech company, and I learned a lot technically as a Senior Firmware Engineer. The San Jose office amenities were decent.
Cons: Upper leadership often felt disconnected from the ground level work. There's a lot of churn in strategic direction, which makes it tough for product development in the fast-paced semiconductor industry. Decision-making can be really slow, impacting project timelines.
Advice to Management: Work on more transparent communication from the top down. Give teams clearer long-term roadmaps and empower managers to make decisions quicker. Engage more with individual contributor engineers to understand challenges.

Decent Pay, Benefits Need a Boost at Sandisk
Pros: Base salary for a Hardware Engineer is quite competitive, especially in Milpitas, CA. The 401k match is pretty solid too, which is a good perk for big tech.
Cons: Health insurance premiums are kinda high, it eats into the paychecks. Also, stock options aren't super generous for us in firmware engineering roles. It's a bit disappointing.
Advice to Management: Review the health insurance plans to make them more affordable for employees. Also, make bonus structures more transparent for all engineering roles.

WLB can be tough in San Jose office
Pros: You get to work on cool tech in the data storage space, which is rewarding. There are often periods where the workload is manageable, and teams are generally collaborative. I did get some flexibility to shift my hours around when I needed to, which was a plus for personal appointments.
Cons: The work-life balance for engineering roles can be rough, with frequent late nights before product launches. It's not uncommon to pull 50+ hour weeks, especially if you're a Firmware Engineer on a critical project. Management doesn't always protect your time, making it hard to disconnect.
Advice to Management: Try to enforce reasonable working hours and respect engineers' personal time. Project planning needs to account for realistic timelines to prevent burnout for Firmware Engineers.

Okay Culture for a Big Tech Company
Pros: The teams are generally supportive, and I really enjoyed working with my direct colleagues in the flash memory division. For a big tech company like Sandisk, they offer pretty solid benefits and the Milpitas, CA office is nice.
Cons: The company culture can feel a bit slow-paced and resistant to new ideas sometimes. As a firmware engineer, it felt like innovation was often bogged down by corporate bureaucracy. Don't expect startup energy here.
Advice to Management: Try to foster a more dynamic environment and encourage risk-taking, especially in product development. Listen more to the ground-level engineers; they have great insights.

Solid Pay, Standard Benefits at Sandisk
Pros: You get solid health insurance, which is a big plus. The 401k match is decent too. For a big tech company, the base salary for a Firmware Engineer is competitive enough in the Milpitas, CA area.
Cons: Bonuses aren't always super generous, and stock refreshers can be a little low compared to other companies. It feels like overall compensation lags behind some of the bigger software-focused firms in the semiconductor industry.
Advice to Management: Focus on making bonus structures more transparent and competitive with other big tech firms. Also, improve the stock refresh grants for experienced engineers to retain talent.

Work-life Balance Is A Real Challenge Here
Pros: Working as a Senior Firmware Engineer, I learned a ton about data storage and flash memory technologies. The pay and benefits for big tech are competitive, and there are many smart people to collaborate with. It's a solid place to grow your skills.
Cons: The work-life balance can be really tough. It's common for projects in the semiconductor industry to demand long hours, sometimes 50-60 hour weeks. There's not much remote work flexibility for core engineering roles in the San Jose office, which is a bummer.
Advice to Management: Management should prioritize realistic project timelines more. It's tough on engineers to constantly push for impossible deadlines. Maybe consider more hybrid or remote options for some engineering roles.

Good Benefits, Pay Could Be Better
Pros: The health insurance and 401k matching are actually really solid. As a big tech company, they do offer decent perks for onsite employees too. The stock options were a nice bonus that helped out a lot.
Cons: Base pay for a Senior Software Engineer felt a little under market for the Milpitas, CA area. It's tough when you're comparing it to other tech companies in the Bay Area. Raises weren't huge, making it hard to keep up with cost of living.
Advice to Management: Management should really re-evaluate the base salary bands for all engineering roles, especially for Senior Software Engineers in high-cost-of-living areas like Milpitas. Better pay would attract and retain top talent.

Decent place for engineers, but it's corporate
Pros: You learn a lot in hardware engineering here, especially in the semiconductor industry. The pay is competitive for the Milpitas office. You work with really smart people.
Cons: The company culture feels very corporate and a bit slow. Innovation can get bogged down by too many processes. It's definitely not a startup vibe, more like big tech.
Advice to Management: Try to empower teams more and cut down on layers of approval. Foster a more agile environment for engineers.

Career growth can be a real challenge at Sandisk
Pros: The pay is solid for a semiconductor company, especially working onsite in the Milpitas office. Benefits are decent too, like the 401k match. It's a stable job if you're comfortable as a Firmware Engineer.
Cons: Career progression is really slow; you'll wait ages for a promotion. There aren't many clear paths to advance, especially for junior engineering roles. Getting new projects can feel like a fight in this big corporate environment.
Advice to Management: Management needs to create clearer career ladders. Invest in internal training for different flash memory technologies. Give engineers more chances to lead projects, not just execute them.
