Okay Pay, Benefits Need a Boost in Charlotte

I've been a Controls Engineer here for a few years in the Charlotte office. It's a big corporate environment, pretty stable. The pay is generally okay, but I think benefits could use some work.

Pros

The base salary for Controls Engineers is pretty competitive for this industry. You also get a decent 401k match, which is standard for a big corporate company like Trane Technologies. It's a solid place to learn about HVAC solutions.

Cons

Health insurance premiums feel too high for what they cover, honestly. Annual raises for building automation roles are just okay, not amazing, so keeping up with inflation is tough. It's not the most modern benefits package.

Advice to Management

Improve the healthcare benefit packages to be more competitive and make sure annual compensation adjustments truly reflect market rates for engineering roles. Employees value that transparency.

Leadership's a Mixed Bag in the Field
Pros: Some of the team leads are awesome, really supportive. They get what it's like doing onsite field work as an HVAC Technician. It's a stable corporate environment.
Cons: Leadership from above feels pretty disconnected from our daily tasks. Decisions about commercial HVAC projects in Houston, TX often don't make sense. There's not enough upward mobility for experienced field staff.
Advice to Management: Try to get more input from the people on the ground. Understand the daily challenges of servicing commercial HVAC systems. Our feedback matters.

Solid Benefits, Pay Just Okay for Engineers
Pros: Health insurance is actually pretty good here, which is nice for a big corporate company like Trane Technologies. The 401k match is also a decent perk for employees.
Cons: The actual salary for Controls Engineer roles in the Davidson, NC office often feels a bit low. Raises are usually pretty small, and it's hard to get a big bump without really pushing for it.
Advice to Management: You should really re-evaluate compensation for engineering roles. Competitive salaries would help attract and keep talent, especially for those working on building management systems in the HVAC industry.

Leadership Varies, Some Good, Some Not So Much
Pros: My direct manager in the Davidson, NC office was genuinely supportive and understood the technical challenges for HVAC systems. It's a solid place for learning if you find the right team within the industrial sector.
Cons: Higher-level corporate leadership often feels disconnected from the ground work. They don't always seem to grasp the day-to-day impact of their decisions on engineering teams, which can make things tough.
Advice to Management: Senior leaders should spend more time with individual contributor teams. Understand the realities on the ground for Project Engineer roles, especially regarding resource allocation and project timelines.
