Decent Team, Culture Needs a Boost

Somewhere has some good people and decent work flexibility, but the overall company culture and leadership's role in fostering inclusion really need work. It's tough to feel fully integrated sometimes.

Pros

My direct team members were solid here. The hybrid work setup in the Austin, TX office was a big plus for my schedule. For a mid-sized tech company, the benefits package was pretty okay.

Cons

The company culture feels pretty cliquey at times. It's hard to feel fully included, especially as a Software Engineer trying to collaborate across different departments. Leadership doesn't always seem to prioritize a truly open environment.

Advice to Management

Really focus on breaking down silos and fostering inclusion across all teams. Acknowledge that the company culture could be more welcoming to everyone, not just established groups.

Leadership is okay, but career growth is tough.
Pros: The team at Somewhere is really solid. I enjoyed the hybrid work model, which gave me some flexibility in my schedule. As a Junior Software Engineer, I learned a lot from my immediate peers in the Austin, TX office.
Cons: Upper leadership can feel pretty disconnected from the day-to-day. There isn't a clear path for career progression, especially for new engineers. It often feels like decisions are made without much input from the ground up.
Advice to Management: Focus more on developing your mid-level managers and creating clear career paths for technical roles. Engage more with individual contributors to understand their daily challenges and aspirations.

Solid Pay for Engineering, Benefits Could Be Better
Pros: As a Software Engineer in the San Francisco office, the base salary is really competitive for the tech industry. I've always felt fairly compensated for my work, and the annual bonuses are a nice bump too. Stock options vest over time which is pretty standard for big tech.
Cons: The health benefits are just okay, not amazing compared to some other big tech players in the Bay Area. There's no childcare subsidy, which is a real drawback for families. Also, the PTO isn't as generous as I'd hoped for senior engineering roles.
Advice to Management: Consider enhancing the benefits package, especially around family support like childcare, to stay competitive.

Decent for now, but watch your back.
Pros: The benefits package is pretty solid here. As a Software Engineer, I've had good access to training and development, which helps keep my skills sharp in the competitive tech industry. It's a pretty big tech company, so there's always something to do.
Cons: Job security isn't what it used to be, especially after the recent layoffs. There's a constant feeling of uncertainty in the Austin office, which makes you wonder if your role is truly safe, even for experienced folks. It makes the hybrid work model feel less stable too.
Advice to Management: Transparency about future plans would really help calm everyone down. We need to know where we stand, especially regarding potential future layoffs. Communicate more openly.
