UL Solutions: Solid for Career, Culture is Mixed
Pros: There are really good learning opportunities for product safety and certification standards here. The pay and benefits are pretty decent for a large corporate environment, especially if you're an experienced engineer. You get to work on interesting projects that really impact global safety.
Cons: Company culture can feel a bit old-school and slow, especially if you're in the Northbrook, IL office and on a hybrid schedule. Innovation sometimes gets bogged down in bureaucracy; it's tough to get new ideas approved quickly for product certification. Work-life balance can suffer during peak cycles; as a Product Safety Engineer, you're sometimes swamped with project deadlines.
Advice to Management: Focus on modernizing some of the internal processes and encourage more cross-departmental collaboration. Empower teams to innovate faster without so much red tape. Acknowledge and reward the hard work during busy periods to help with employee morale.

Decent Work-Life Balance for Compliance Engineers
Pros: The hybrid work model is a huge plus, makes my weekly commute to the Northbrook, IL office manageable. For a Compliance Engineer, the workload is generally steady, not too many crazy crunch times. You can usually hit your 40 hours without too much stress in the product testing industry.
Cons: Sometimes it feels like there's a lot of pressure to be 'always on' even with the hybrid setup. Project deadlines can sneak up on you, making it tough to truly disconnect. PTO approval can be a bit slow, so planning ahead is key if you need time off.
Advice to Management: Management should really work on clearer project timelines to avoid last-minute rushes for us Compliance Engineers. Also, streamlining the PTO approval process would go a long way in improving employee morale and making work-life balance more predictable.

Hybrid model is decent, but could be better
Pros: The hybrid work model is a huge plus for Safety Engineer roles like mine. Being able to work from home a couple of days a week really helps my work-life balance. There's generally trust to get your job done, which is good.
Cons: Even with hybrid, sometimes it feels like a mandatory onsite policy for no real reason. You can't just pick your WFH days; it's often fixed. For a global company, their remote options for some teams are pretty limited, especially for laboratory-dependent tasks.
Advice to Management: Really look at which roles genuinely need to be onsite for specific days, especially for those not directly in the labs. More autonomy in hybrid schedules would boost morale across the board.
