Clinical Research Coordinator
2.9

Work-Life Balance Can Be a Real Struggle Here
Pros: You do get decent benefits and PTO, which is good for an academic medical center. The team in our specific research studies group was supportive when things got crazy, which helped with the heavy workload.
Cons: The hours are often unpredictable for patient care and research deadlines. We're consistently understaffed in many departments, meaning lots of overtime. It's hard to maintain a good personal life with all the demands of healthcare.
Advice to Management: Management needs to address the staffing issues across various departments, especially for critical onsite roles like Clinical Research Coordinators. More support means better work-life for employees and less burnout.

Good benefits, but the pay could be better
Pros: The health insurance is solid, definitely a major perk you get working for an academic medical center like UAB. They also have good retirement options and some tuition benefits if you're looking to continue your education or for family members. The PTO is fair, and there's job security.
Cons: The pay for clinical research coordinator roles isn't very competitive, especially compared to private companies. Annual raises are pretty small, so it's tough to see your salary grow much over time. It can feel like you're underpaid for the amount of work you put in at the Birmingham, AL campus.
Advice to Management: Management should really look into making salaries more competitive for all staff, especially those in essential research and clinical support roles. Better pay would help retain talent and attract skilled professionals to our academic healthcare setting.

Clinical Nurse

Tough on flexible scheduling in nursing
Pros: You do get solid benefits and there's good job security within the healthcare industry, especially for nursing roles at a large academic medical center like UAB. They offer decent training too for new hires.
Cons: The work flexibility just isn't there for us. It's almost all fixed shifts, and trying to swap or get specific days off for personal appointments is really tough. This makes work-life balance a constant struggle for nurses on the Birmingham, AL campus.
Advice to Management: Management needs to seriously look at offering more flexible scheduling options for clinical staff. Even small changes, like a more forgiving swap policy or a few remote options where possible, would help retention in this demanding healthcare industry.

Staff Nurse

Shift flexibility is okay for nurses
Pros: You can usually swap shifts with other nurses without too much fuss, which is a big plus for a Staff Nurse at a large university hospital. Management tries to accommodate time-off requests if you give them enough notice, which helps with personal appointments. The benefits for healthcare professionals are pretty solid too.
Cons: True work flexibility is still pretty limited by the constant patient care needs and staffing ratios. Don't expect many hybrid or remote work options for clinical roles, obviously. Sometimes you're stuck with less desirable shifts, especially when you're newer to the team.
Advice to Management: Consider exploring more innovative scheduling tools to ease the burden on nurses and improve work flexibility even further. Better staffing overall would make a huge difference.
