Work-life balance is tough in production

As a Production Supervisor at PPG, I've seen some good things, especially with stability. But the long hours and tough shift work really make work-life balance hard to achieve in the chemicals manufacturing sector.

Pros

It's a stable company in the chemicals manufacturing industry. There's decent job security, which is a big plus. The benefits package is pretty solid for full-time employees.

Cons

Work-life balance here is a real struggle, especially as a Production Supervisor. You're constantly working long hours, often 50-hour weeks, with inconsistent shift work at the Pittsburgh plant. It's tough to plan anything personal.

Advice to Management

Try to staff more generously so supervisors aren't constantly covering shifts. Focus on better scheduling to improve employee well-being.

Leadership can be out of touch for plant roles
Pros: The pay and benefits are pretty good here, especially for the **coatings industry**. I've learned a lot about different **manufacturing processes** on the job. There's decent job security being such a big corporate company.
Cons: Upper **leadership** often feels disconnected from the actual plant floor in **Strongsville, OH**. It's tough to get clear direction or see a path for **career growth** as a **Production Supervisor**. Decision-making is super slow and bureaucratic.
Advice to Management: Management needs to spend more time on the production floor. Really listen to supervisors and frontline workers about day-to-day challenges instead of just focusing on numbers and metrics from afar.

Culture is Okay, Could Use Updates
Pros: The benefits package is solid. You get good health insurance and a decent 401k match. There's also good job security for those working in the coatings industry. As a Chemist, I felt pretty stable here. People usually help each other out, especially within smaller R&D groups in the Pittsburgh office.
Cons: The overall corporate culture feels a bit outdated sometimes. It's tough to get new ideas heard or implemented quickly. Work-life balance can really suffer during crunch times, making it hard to maintain. Decision-making processes are often slow, which can be frustrating in paint manufacturing.
Advice to Management: Try to modernize the corporate culture a bit. Encourage more innovation from all levels. Speed up decision-making processes.

Decent Job Security for a Big Corporate Role
Pros: Being part of a large corporate like PPG means solid job security, especially in the Pittsburgh office. They don't just lay people off for no reason in the specialty coatings industry. I've felt pretty stable as a Process Engineer here.
Cons: It's a huge company, so things move slow. Don't expect rapid promotions or quick project changes. Sometimes career growth feels stagnant, which can get boring.
Advice to Management: Try to speed up the internal promotion processes. Invest more in fresh talent and innovation in coatings manufacturing.
