Field Service Technician

Solid place for field work, leadership has pros and cons
Pros: For a Field Service Technician, the immediate team leads are usually pretty supportive. They understand the demands of elevator maintenance and are decent at scheduling. There's a lot of training if you're new to the vertical transportation industry, which is a big plus.
Cons: Upper management feels pretty disconnected from the daily field work. Decisions often come down without much input from the ground, which can be frustrating for a field tech. Communication isn't always great, especially with new policies impacting our service calls.
Advice to Management: Listen more to the field technicians and front-line managers. Their insights on elevator repair and customer needs are crucial for improving service. Improve communication channels from corporate down to the local branches, especially for those in maintenance roles.

Tough but rewarding for Field Service Techs
Pros: There's always steady work in the elevator maintenance industry. You really learn a ton about vertical transport systems. The pay is solid, and benefits are decent for this kind of onsite work.
Cons: Work-life balance here is pretty tough, especially as a Field Service Technician. Expect long hours and frequent weekend calls. It's hard to make plans outside of work.
Advice to Management: Focus on better scheduling for Field Service Technicians. It would improve morale and help with employee retention.

Pay is okay, benefits are solid.
Pros: The medical benefits are actually pretty good, especially for a big corporate company. You get decent coverage, and the 401k match is solid. It's a stable job in elevator maintenance.
Cons: The base salary for a Field Service Technician in the NYC metro area feels a bit low for the cost of living. Overtime is where you make real money, which means long hours sometimes. Raises aren't always great, either.
Advice to Management: Review the base pay for Field Service Technicians, especially in high cost-of-living areas. It would help attract and retain talent without relying so heavily on overtime.

Cons: Career progression feels really slow. Getting promoted for Field Service Technician roles in New York City is tough. It's a very corporate environment.

Good training, but career growth can be slow
Pros: Solid initial training for new Field Service Technicians. You really learn a lot about elevator and escalator systems. Job security is pretty good in the maintenance industry. There's always work for elevator mechanics.
Cons: Career growth is where it gets tough here. Moving up feels like it takes forever, especially in the Chicago, IL branch. There aren't many clear paths for advancement beyond just being a senior technician. Promotions are really slow in this corporate structure.
Advice to Management: Please create clearer, more transparent career paths for Field Service Technicians. Invest in leadership training to help move people up faster within the company.

Tough schedule for elevator pros
Pros: The job security is solid for a big corporate giant like Otis. I've always had plenty of work in the NYC metro area, so that's a plus.
Cons: Work flexibility is almost zero for Field Service Technician roles. You're always on call for elevator maintenance and there's no real remote option. It's tough to plan anything personal.
Advice to Management: Management needs to find ways to offer better schedules or more support for Field Service Technicians. The constant on-call demand makes it hard to stay long-term.

Field Service Life is Demanding but Rewarding
Pros: The base pay for this role is solid, which helps make the tough hours worth it. You often work 40-hour weeks, and the company vehicle is a big plus. It's a very stable job in the elevator industry.
Cons: However, on-call weeks can totally wreck your personal life. Emergency elevator repairs mean you're always on standby, and it's hard to make plans. The onsite work means zero work flexibility.
Advice to Management: Work on better staffing or fairer on-call schedules to ease the burden on individual Field Service Technicians. Burnout is a real concern.

Leadership needs to step up big time
Pros: The job security for elevator mechanics is solid in the vertical transportation industry. You learn a ton working with complex systems daily, and the benefits package is decent for a large corporate company like Otis.
Cons: Leadership in the Chicago branch can be pretty disconnected from us field guys. It's tough to get clear direction sometimes, especially with unexpected issues on hoistways. Upper management doesn't always understand the day-to-day challenges of onsite work.
Advice to Management: Spend more time with the field teams to understand their challenges directly. Better communication and support from local leadership would make a huge difference for us in the Chicago area.

Solid Job Security for Elevator Techs
Pros: As a Field Service Technician, there's always a need for elevator maintenance and repairs. This means job security is pretty high in the vertical transportation industry. Being part of a large corporate entity like Otis helps a lot with stability.
Cons: The work-life balance is tough, especially with on-call rotations. You're always working onsite in the Chicago region, and the hours can be long. It's physically draining work, and career growth for technicians can feel really slow sometimes.
Advice to Management: Please try to improve scheduling for Field Service Technician shifts. Better work-life balance would significantly reduce burnout. We need more support for those of us out in the field.

Work Flexibility: It's a Mixed Bag
Pros: Some project phases allow for hybrid work, which is nice for a global company like Otis. I've been able to work from home a couple of days a week when deadlines permit, especially during the design review stage.
Cons: As a Project Engineer, truly remote work isn't really an option. Many engineering roles require being onsite for physical testing or team collaboration, which limits flexibility for vertical transportation projects. It's hard to shift your schedule even for appointments.
Advice to Management: Management should explore more hybrid options for specific engineering roles within Otis Elevator Co. It would really help with employee retention and modern work expectations. Even slight shifts in daily schedules would be a huge boost.
