Hybrid Work Is Okay, But Varies By Team

My time at ABB as an Electrical Engineer in Houston was a mixed bag. The company is huge, so experiences really differ depending on your team and specific role.

Pros

Some teams really embrace the hybrid work model. For electrical engineering roles, you can often WFH a couple of days a week. That was a big plus for my work-life balance in the Houston office.

Cons

Other departments, especially in manufacturing or field service, are much more onsite. It feels like a very traditional corporate environment at times, which limits true flexibility. Remote work isn't really an option long-term for most positions.

Advice to Management

Try to standardize the work flexibility policies across departments. It'd help a lot for employee morale and attracting top talent, especially for technical roles.

Good Benefits, Pay is Solid for Engineers
Pros: The health insurance is really comprehensive, which is a huge relief. The 401k match is also pretty decent. As an Electrical Engineer working in industrial automation, my base salary was competitive for the Houston market.
Cons: Annual raises can feel a bit small, like they don't always keep up with inflation. The bonus payout isn't always clear either, which is tough in a big corporate environment. It feels like merit isn't always fully recognized.
Advice to Management: Management should definitely work on making career progression paths clearer and more transparent. Also, a more open dialogue about compensation and bonus structures would really help employee morale. It's a big company, but communication can always improve.

Decent Pay for Engineers, Benefits are Solid
Pros: As an Electrical Engineer here, the base salary is pretty competitive, especially for the Houston, TX office. My compensation for industrial automation projects was solid. The health insurance and 401k match are definitely decent, giving you a good safety net.
Cons: Annual raises aren't always great; they can feel pretty minimal year-to-year. The bonus structure isn't very transparent, particularly for onsite engineering roles, which is frustrating sometimes.
Advice to Management: Management should really look into making annual raises more consistent and transparent. It'd boost morale a lot for engineers across the company, especially those in core roles.

Solid benefits, but pay could improve
Pros: The health insurance coverage is pretty comprehensive, and the 401k match is a good perk that adds up. It's a big corporate company, so you do get that stability and a decent overall package.
Cons: My biggest gripe is that the base salary for an Electrical Engineer here in Houston just isn't keeping up. Merit increases are often tiny, which makes it hard to see significant pay growth without taking on a completely new position.
Advice to Management: It would be great if ABB could take a hard look at its compensation structure, especially for experienced Electrical Engineers. Better pay would really help attract and keep talent in this competitive industrial automation market.
