Pay is decent, but don't expect big tech salaries

Overall, Virtusa offers an okay compensation package. The benefits are decent, but the salary for a Software Engineer could definitely be better, especially when comparing to other corporate IT firms. It's fine if you're not chasing top dollar.

Pros

The health benefits are pretty solid, which is a big plus. As a Software Engineer working remote, it's nice to have stable health coverage without crazy premiums. The WFH setup definitely saves on commuting too.

Cons

Base salary for technical roles in IT consulting isn't as competitive as I'd hoped. You won't see big tech numbers here. The annual raises are also pretty small, so don't count on huge bumps.

Advice to Management

You should really look into increasing base salaries, especially for experienced technical roles. It's tough to retain top talent when other companies offer significantly more for similar software development work.

Decent place to start, but growth is tough
Pros: I got to learn a lot about project delivery and different client engagements as a junior Software Engineer. It's a big corporate, so there's some stability in the Hyderabad office.
Cons: Career growth felt really slow. Promotions for IT services professionals don't come easy, and there wasn't a clear path for advancement. I felt stuck after a couple of years working mostly onsite.
Advice to Management: Management should really invest in clear career development plans. Give your Software Engineers more chances to grow, not just work on the same projects endlessly.

Hybrid Model is Just Okay, Needs Improvement
Pros: I like that there's a hybrid model, so you don't have to be in the Hyderabad office every day. For some software development projects, you can sometimes arrange your WFH days with your team. It's decent for basic flexibility.
Cons: The work flexibility isn't consistent across all teams; some teams expect you to be onsite more often. As a Software Engineer, I've found it tough to get full remote approval, even for personal needs. There's not much wiggle room sometimes.
Advice to Management: Management should standardize hybrid policies across all IT consulting projects. Give employees more choice in WFH days, especially for senior Software Engineers.

Work-life balance is a real mixed bag
Pros: Some teams and projects, particularly with less demanding clients, allowed for decent 40-hour weeks. The option for a hybrid model was nice when it was actually respected, giving some flexibility for personal commitments in Hyderabad.
Cons: As a Senior Software Engineer, I frequently found myself working 50+ hours, especially on tight deadlines for our IT services consulting projects. There's a strong expectation to always be available, which really impacts your personal life and can lead to burnout. It's tough to truly disconnect.
Advice to Management: Management needs to set clearer boundaries for client expectations and empower project leads to protect their teams' time. Burnout is a real issue for folks in IT services, and it's impacting morale.
