Lab Technician
2.9

Tough to move up here, especially in R&D
Pros: The team in the lab was great, super supportive. You learn a lot about specialty chemicals and polymer formulations, which is good for foundational knowledge. There's also decent job security for long-term employees.
Cons: Career progression is really slow for Lab Technician roles. There aren't many opportunities to move into higher-level scientist or management positions unless someone retires. I felt a lack of mentorship for career development.
Advice to Management: Management needs to create clearer career paths for technical staff. Investing in more training and internal promotion opportunities would really help with retention.

Career growth is tough for engineers here
Pros: The pay is decent for the specialty chemicals industry. You get solid benefits and a stable onsite role at the Essex, UK office. Good for long-term job security if you aren't looking to move up fast.
Cons: Career progression as a Process Engineer feels really limited. There aren't many clear paths to advance, so you often feel stuck in your current role. Internal promotions are rare, and opportunities for new projects are few.
Advice to Management: Create clearer career paths and invest more in internal development programs, especially for engineering roles. More opportunities for cross-functional projects would also help.

R&D Scientist

Okay benefits, pay could be better
Pros: As an R&D Scientist, the health insurance package is pretty solid. We also get a decent 401k match, which is a big plus for a corporate job.
Cons: But the base salary isn't really competitive for the specialty chemicals industry in Charlotte, NC. Annual raises are usually pretty small, making it hard to feel valued.
Advice to Management: Management needs to seriously re-evaluate compensation for technical roles, especially in R&D. Market rates for specialty chemicals have gone up, and Synthomer isn't keeping pace. It's causing good people to look elsewhere.

Decent pay, but culture needs a look
Pros: As a Process Engineer, the base pay for my role was pretty solid. I felt secure with the benefits too. They're a big global company, so there's good job stability in chemical manufacturing if you stick it out.
Cons: The company culture can feel a bit old-school and slow. It's tough to get new ideas for polymer materials projects approved sometimes. Work-life balance can get tricky with tight deadlines, especially for onsite roles at the Harlow, Essex plant.
Advice to Management: Management should really try to modernise the culture. Listen more to the engineers on the ground and be open to new processes and technologies in polymer materials production.

Hybrid Work at Synthomer Is Just Okay
Pros: I do like that the company officially supports a hybrid model for many roles. For my Process Engineer role, I can usually WFH 2 days a week which helps with my commute. It's a solid option compared to being fully onsite, which is common in chemicals manufacturing.
Cons: Sometimes there's unspoken pressure to be in the Harlow office more often than the policy suggests. Ad-hoc flexibility for things like appointments can be tough to get approved. It doesn't always feel truly flexible.
Advice to Management: Leadership should reinforce the hybrid policy consistently. Give teams more autonomy to decide their in-office days. Trust employees more with their work arrangements.

Stable but slow culture for engineers
Pros: You get decent benefits and the job security is pretty solid for a global corporation. As a Chemical Engineer, I had good autonomy on my projects, which was a plus.
Cons: The company culture feels really old-school and it's tough to get new ideas approved. There's a lot of bureaucracy, which slows everything down in the specialty chemicals industry. Team collaboration sometimes feels forced.
Advice to Management: Try to embrace modern ways of working and empower teams more. Encourage real cross-functional collaboration instead of just talking about it.

Leadership is a mixed bag here
Pros: Some project leads are really supportive for Process Engineer roles. You get decent autonomy in the Charlotte, NC office for day-to-day tasks, which is nice.
Cons: Upper leadership in this big corporate setup often seems disconnected from site operations. It's tough when decisions for specialty chemicals production come down without much input from the ground level, which can create extra hurdles.
Advice to Management: Upper management needs to improve communication and transparency. It would help a lot if they actively sought input from Process Engineers and site teams before implementing major changes affecting specialty chemicals production.

Hybrid Work Model Needs Tweaks
Pros: I've worked here for a few years as a Process Engineer. The hybrid work model is a nice idea. Being able to work from home a couple days helps with personal stuff. It's a decent perk for a corporate setting.
Cons: The problem is, it's not always consistent. For specialty chemicals manufacturing, there are often onsite requirements for lab or plant work. So, true flexibility can be tough in the Charlotte office for some roles. You end up being onsite more than planned.
Advice to Management: I'd say really look at how the hybrid work model is applied across different departments. It works better for some office roles than for those in specialty chemicals manufacturing who need to be onsite often. Make the guidelines clearer and more equitable.

Leadership needs a clearer direction
Pros: Some of the immediate team leads are pretty solid. They genuinely care about their teams and try to shield us from corporate politics, especially in the Charlotte office. There's a decent effort to maintain a good safety culture in our specialty chemicals production.
Cons: Upper management often seems out of touch with day-to-day operations for us Chemical Engineer roles. Decisions feel slow and inconsistent, which really bogs down new polymer solutions development. There's not much proactive support for career growth from the top.
Advice to Management: Get more involved with the technical teams. Listen to the folks on the ground doing the actual development work. Create a clearer vision for the future of our polymer solutions business.

Tough to move up in specialty chemicals
Pros: The team I worked with in the Charlotte, NC office was genuinely supportive. There's good job security for a large corporate company in the specialty chemicals sector. You can learn a lot about polymer solutions if you're new to the industry.
Cons: Career progression for a Technical Sales Representative is really slow. It felt like there weren't many clear paths to move up or develop into higher-level roles. Opportunities for new projects or cross-functional experience are limited, making it hard to gain new skills.
Advice to Management: Management needs to create more defined career paths for employees, especially for roles like Technical Sales Representative. Investing in training programs and internal mobility would help retain talent.
