Okay work-life for engineers, but depends on team

Working as a Software Engineer at Sabre has its ups and downs when it comes to work-life balance. It's not bad, but it's not always great either for corporate environments.

Pros

Most teams here encourage a good 40-hour week, especially for software engineering roles. The hybrid model is nice, letting you work remote a few days from the Southlake, TX office. It's decent for general travel technology.

Cons

Some projects in the airline solutions division can get really intense, leading to longer hours. It's not uncommon to put in extra time before major releases, which affects personal plans. Flexibility can vary a lot by manager.

Advice to Management

Try to standardize expectations around project crunch times across all engineering teams. More consistent work-life balance would really help morale.

Decent Stability, But Compensation Lags
Pros: I liked the job security you get with a big corporate player like Sabre. The health insurance is solid, and there's a pretty standard 401k match. For a Software Engineer, the work itself can be pretty interesting in the travel technology domain.
Cons: The pay here is definitely not competitive for the tech industry, especially for technical roles like mine. Raises are super small, and there aren't many stock options. It just feels like your compensation isn't keeping up, especially when you compare it to other companies in the Southlake, TX area.
Advice to Management: Management really needs to re-evaluate the compensation packages for all employees, especially for engineers. We need better base salaries and more robust bonus or stock options to attract and retain top talent in the current tech market.

Growth is slow in Southlake tech.
Pros: It's a very stable company if you're looking for job security in travel tech. As a Software Engineer, you get good exposure to complex airline solutions and large-scale systems, which is decent for foundational knowledge.
Cons: Career growth opportunities are pretty limited for tech roles in the Southlake, TX office. There's not much room for advancement, and internal promotions feel few and far between. It can feel like a corporate environment where you're stuck in your current role.
Advice to Management: Management needs to establish clearer career paths and invest more in upskilling employees, especially for core technical roles like Software Engineer. Encourage more innovation and internal mobility.

Hybrid Model Works Okay, But Could Be Better
Pros: I like the hybrid work model here; it's generally 3 days in the Southlake, Texas office, 2 days WFH. This setup gives me some balance. It's good for collaborating in person with my dev team on travel technology projects.
Cons: The "flexibility" can be a bit rigid sometimes. Getting approval for fully remote weeks is tough, and there aren't many remote options for my Software Engineer role beyond the standard hybrid. It's not as flexible as some other big tech companies.
Advice to Management: Consider offering more truly remote roles or at least more flexible hybrid options for long-term employees, especially within travel technology. Trust your Software Engineers more.
