Background
The Black-faced Spoonbill is a popular yet highly threatened waterbird. Conservationists and researchers have collaborated for over 30 years to protect this species from extinction. Action plans for implementing conservation activities were published in 1995 and 2010. In response to emerging threats, this action plan is now being revised to provide updated guidance and prioritisation for conservation activities in the flyway.

The first draft of the document is complete. Professional editing is necessary before publication and the launch of this new plan.
Why this is important
The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society has been actively involved in the conservation of birds and their habitats both locally and regionally. The Black-faced Spoonbill is an iconic species for both Hong Kong and its neighbouring area. The HKBWS has been involved in its conservation since the launch of its first action plan in 1995. Since then several conservation projects have been initiated to manage the species’ habitats. This project demonstrates how international collaboration with NGOs, researchers, site managers, conservationists and government officials can be utilised to implement activities for the protection of a bird and its habitats. The HKBWS has achieved its goal of safeguarding birds and their habitats by drafting, promoting and publishing the plan.
