Field Application Engineer

Solid Technology, Traditional Culture
Pros: I loved the actual power systems engineering work; it's genuinely interesting. As a Field Application Engineer, I got to travel and see different applications. The team in the Houston office was generally supportive and smart.
Cons: The corporate culture feels pretty top-down sometimes, not very innovative from a people management perspective. There's not much emphasis on work-life balance for my role, especially with travel. Things can move slowly here.
Advice to Management: Try to empower teams more and embrace modern management styles. More focus on employee well-being would help.

Solid job security for core engineering roles
Pros: OMICRON electronics feels pretty stable as a company in the electrical engineering industry. As an Electrical Engineer, I've felt secure in my role here. They're established, not a fly-by-night operation, especially in the Houston, TX office.
Cons: Sometimes projects can shift priorities quickly, which can make you wonder about long-term project stability. It's not a place with rapid upward mobility, so growth can feel slow if you're looking for fast career progression.
Advice to Management: Try to be more transparent about upcoming project pipeline changes. This would help employees feel even more secure about their long-term contributions and reduce uncertainty.

Leadership is a Mixed Bag Here
Pros: The senior managers are super knowledgeable about electrical testing equipment in the power utility industry. They're usually approachable, which is good for us Field Application Engineers. You can learn a lot from their technical expertise if you work on an onsite or hybrid model.
Cons: Decision-making often feels pretty slow from the top. There's not enough clear communication about company strategy, so it's tough to see the bigger picture. I've seen some good ideas get lost in the shuffle because of this; it's a common challenge for a mid-sized company.
Advice to Management: Work on clearer communication regarding company direction and strategy. Speed up decision-making processes to keep projects moving forward. Empower middle management more.

Decent place for engineers, but watch hours
Pros: The team here, especially within the embedded systems roles, is really supportive. You get good exposure to cutting-edge measurement technology. The hybrid work setup from the Houston, TX office is a big plus; it lets you split time well.
Cons: Sometimes projects ramp up fast, and as a Firmware Engineer, you're expected to put in extra hours. It can be tough to keep a consistent 40-hour week. There's not always a lot of flexibility when deadlines hit.

Decent Pay, Benefits are Pretty Standard
Pros: The base salary for an Electrical Engineer here is solid; it's definitely competitive within the high-voltage testing and power system industry. The 401k match is okay, and health insurance covers the basics well enough.
Cons: Don't expect super fancy perks, though. The benefits could be better for a mid-sized company; things like PTO are just standard, not generous. There isn't much flexibility around benefits customization either, which is a bummer.
Advice to Management: Consider enhancing the overall benefits package to attract and retain top talent, especially for specialized roles in power system engineering. Look at more flexible PTO options or better wellness perks. It'd make a big difference for us.

Solid job security for technical roles here
Pros: The job stability at OMICRON electronics is definitely a highlight. As a Field Application Engineer, I never really worried about layoffs, even during economic shifts affecting other tech companies. It's a solid mid-sized company in the power grid testing sector, which feels pretty secure.
Cons: While job security is good, growth opportunities can feel a bit slow for some roles. You might have to really push for career advancement or new challenges here. The pay, while decent, isn't top-tier for the industry, especially in the Houston, TX office.
Advice to Management: Focus on creating clearer paths for career growth and invest more in competitive compensation for specialized engineering talent. This would help retain your best people and attract new talent in the electrical engineering space.

Decent Balance for Tech Roles, Some Crunch
Pros: Work-life balance as a Test Engineer in the Houston office is generally okay. Most weeks, I kept to 40 hours, which is nice. The hybrid model was a huge plus for avoiding traffic and getting errands done.
Cons: When project deadlines hit, especially in our power utility industry, it got tough. I had to put in extra hours and the onsite work felt less flexible then. It wasn't constant, but those periods were draining.
Advice to Management: Try to better manage project loads to avoid crunch times. Consistency in work hours would really improve morale for technical roles.
