Junior Civil Engineer

Work-life balance is okay, but it varies
Pros: The hybrid work model is a huge plus for me, offering some flexibility as a Junior Civil Engineer. I don't have to be in the London office every single day. We also get a pretty decent holiday allowance which helps recharge.
Cons: It's easy for project deadlines to creep into evenings, especially when working on big infrastructure projects. Sometimes, you're expected to push hard, and the workload can feel inconsistent. It can be tough to say no sometimes.
Advice to Management: Try to implement better workload management tools and clearer boundaries for engineering teams. It would help prevent burnout and ensure a more consistent work-life balance for everyone.

Solid place for early career engineers
Pros: There are good structured learning paths if you look for them, which is great for career growth as a Civil Engineer. In the New York office, you get to work on diverse infrastructure projects, building a solid resume. The support for professional licensure is also a big plus for engineering consultants.
Cons: Progression can feel slow sometimes, especially past the junior levels. It's tough to move up without changing teams or even departments, which can be frustrating. Mentorship isn't always consistent, which affects skill development and limits career growth opportunities.
Advice to Management: Standardize the mentorship program across teams to ensure everyone gets consistent guidance. Make promotion criteria clearer for mid-career engineering roles to improve career growth visibility within the transportation sector.

Solid hybrid work, but expect busy periods
Pros: I liked the hybrid work setup. It gave me a couple of WFH days each week, which was great for my commute into the London office. For a Civil Engineer, the project variety is excellent, and it's generally a 40-hour work week.
Cons: The biggest downside is when project deadlines hit. You can expect to put in extra hours on infrastructure projects, which really impacts your personal time. Sometimes the workload for design work feels inconsistent.
Advice to Management: Try to balance the project load more evenly across teams. It would help prevent burnout during peak times, especially for those in critical engineering roles.
