Good Benefits, Pay Could Be Better

I was a Financial Analyst at AIG's New York City office for a few years. It's a massive insurance company, so the benefits package is definitely a plus. However, I often felt like the base salary wasn't really keeping pace with market rates or even the cost of living in NYC.

Pros

The health insurance is really comprehensive; it's a huge perk. Dental and vision coverage are solid too. For a big corporate insurance firm, the 401k match kicks in pretty well after you're vested, which is a good deal for financial analysts thinking long-term.

Cons

Base pay for Financial Analyst roles felt a bit low, especially for the workload. Annual raises were usually pretty small, not always keeping up with inflation or what other finance positions pay. It's tough when you're working in the New York City office and constantly feel underpaid compared to industry standards.

Advice to Management

Re-evaluate salary bands for junior and mid-level finance positions, especially in high-cost-of-living areas like New York City. Fair compensation helps with employee retention and morale, making AIG more competitive in the insurance industry.

Work-Life Balance is Decent, Can Be Challenging
Pros: I liked the hybrid work model; it gave some flexibility during the week. For a large corporate environment, the benefits package was solid. When things weren't crazy busy, you could generally stick to your 40-hour weeks.
Cons: As a Claims Adjuster, it's easy to get overloaded, and that definitely impacted my personal time. There were periods where I worked more than 50 hours trying to keep up with claims. It can be tough to truly unplug after hours.
Advice to Management: Management needs to better address workload distribution, especially for claims processing teams. More staffing or better tools could really help prevent burnout for insurance professionals.

Leadership is okay, definitely a corporate vibe
Pros: The job security for insurance professionals is pretty solid here. You've got decent benefits and remote work is a real plus, especially being remote from Texas. It's a big, stable company in the insurance industry.
Cons: Leadership can be inconsistent. Some managers are great, others are micromanagers with too much on their plate. There's not much room for quick career growth without constantly pushing for it. Sometimes communication feels siloed.
Advice to Management: Work on leadership training across the board. Standardize expectations for managers and ensure they aren't overloaded. Better communication between departments would help a lot.

Decent Stability for a Big Insurance Company
Pros: As an Underwriter, I felt pretty secure in my remote role. It's a large corporate company; they aren't going anywhere fast. The benefits package is solid for the insurance industry.
Cons: Frequent team restructures can make you feel a bit unsettled. Even at AIG, you don't always know what's coming for your department. It impacts your overall job security vibes.
Advice to Management: Try to communicate changes more clearly and further in advance. Constant reorgs create unease among employees, especially concerning their job security in specific product lines.
