Leadership is a mixed bag, honestly

I've worked as an Underwriter in the New York City office for a few years. It's a big corporate company, so you expect some bureaucracy. The leadership here has its moments, but it's not always consistent across teams. Sometimes you feel supported, other times not so much.

Pros

The **insurance industry** is stable, and AIG provides good job security for **underwriter roles**. There are solid resources and training available if you're proactive. It's a good place to learn the ropes in a large, corporate environment.

Cons

Leadership can feel out of touch with daily operations for those of us on the ground. Decision-making is often slow, and there's a lack of clear direction from upper management sometimes. Career progression can feel like a guessing game here.

Advice to Management

Try to get more input from front-line underwriters and improve communication channels. Streamline decision-making processes. Invest more in visible career paths.

Work-Life Balance is Decent, Can Be Challenging
Pros: I liked the hybrid work model; it gave some flexibility during the week. For a large corporate environment, the benefits package was solid. When things weren't crazy busy, you could generally stick to your 40-hour weeks.
Cons: As a Claims Adjuster, it's easy to get overloaded, and that definitely impacted my personal time. There were periods where I worked more than 50 hours trying to keep up with claims. It can be tough to truly unplug after hours.
Advice to Management: Management needs to better address workload distribution, especially for claims processing teams. More staffing or better tools could really help prevent burnout for insurance professionals.

Leadership is okay, definitely a corporate vibe
Pros: The job security for insurance professionals is pretty solid here. You've got decent benefits and remote work is a real plus, especially being remote from Texas. It's a big, stable company in the insurance industry.
Cons: Leadership can be inconsistent. Some managers are great, others are micromanagers with too much on their plate. There's not much room for quick career growth without constantly pushing for it. Sometimes communication feels siloed.
Advice to Management: Work on leadership training across the board. Standardize expectations for managers and ensure they aren't overloaded. Better communication between departments would help a lot.

Decent Stability for a Big Insurance Company
Pros: As an Underwriter, I felt pretty secure in my remote role. It's a large corporate company; they aren't going anywhere fast. The benefits package is solid for the insurance industry.
Cons: Frequent team restructures can make you feel a bit unsettled. Even at AIG, you don't always know what's coming for your department. It impacts your overall job security vibes.
Advice to Management: Try to communicate changes more clearly and further in advance. Constant reorgs create unease among employees, especially concerning their job security in specific product lines.
