Leadership is okay, but needs more vision

It's a decent place to work in the Singapore education sector, but the senior leadership team can be a bit disconnected. We need clearer direction sometimes, especially for our teaching roles.

Pros

Some department heads are really supportive, especially for new lecturers. They give you a lot of autonomy in your courses. It's a stable public institution job, which is a plus in the education sector here.

Cons

Senior management can feel pretty removed from daily operations. Decisions often feel slow and a bit bureaucratic for a big polytechnic. There isn't always a clear strategic vision for new programs, which makes planning tough.

Advice to Management

Be more visible to the ground staff. Share a clearer, long-term vision for Temasek Polytechnic with all employees. Faster decision-making would also help.

Decent Polytechnic gig, but flexibility is low.
Pros: Job security is pretty solid, typical for public sector **higher education** in **Singapore**. You get decent holidays and benefits, which is great for family time. The work environment among fellow **Lecturers** is usually collaborative.
Cons: **Work flexibility** here isn't great. Most **Lecturers** are expected **onsite** for classes and all meetings. It's tough to adjust schedules even for personal appointments, making hybrid work nearly impossible.
Advice to Management: Consider implementing more structured hybrid work options for **academic staff**. This could really boost morale and retention, especially for **Lecturer** roles where some tasks could easily be done remotely.

Decent Pay, But Benefits Could Improve
Pros: The salary for a Lecturer here is pretty decent for a public educational institution in Singapore. You get solid medical benefits too, which is a big plus for a stable job.
Cons: Annual increments are super slow though, especially for teaching roles in the polytechnic sector. The yearly bonus isn't anything to write home about, so don't expect big payouts.
Advice to Management: Look into making annual increments more competitive for long-serving staff. A clearer path for performance-based bonuses for teaching staff would also help.

Okay Stability, Slow Career Path
Pros: You get decent job security as a Lecturer in this public institution. The benefits are solid, and there's a strong focus on professional development within the tertiary education field. Colleagues are generally supportive, which makes the daily grind easier.
Cons: Career growth and upward mobility are quite slow here. There aren't many clear paths for promotion, and opportunities for significant new challenges are limited. It can feel like you're stuck in the same role for a long time.
Advice to Management: Management should really look into creating clearer career progression frameworks for Lecturers. It would help retain talent if there were more defined routes for advancement and opportunities for challenging new projects beyond standard teaching duties.
