Tough Hours, But You Learn A Lot

Working at AlphaSense as an SDR in the New York City office was definitely a grind. The market intelligence industry is demanding, so expect to put in long hours. It's a fast-paced startup environment where career growth is possible if you're willing to work for it, but work-life balance isn't always a priority.

Pros

I've learned a ton about the FinTech space and how to sell a complex SaaS platform. The compensation for sales roles is pretty competitive if you hit your numbers. It's a solid place to jumpstart your career if you're fresh out of college.

Cons

Work-life balance here is rough, especially as an SDR. You're often working well past 5 PM and sometimes on weekends to hit targets. The 'hybrid model' means you're still in the New York City office most days, which doesn't always feel flexible.

Advice to Management

Try to find ways to support your SDRs with their workloads, especially in the FinTech space. More realistic targets or better tools could help improve overall work-life balance.

Solid Start, Hard to Grow Past SDR
Pros: As a Sales Development Representative, I got great initial training on their market intelligence platform. It's a fantastic way to learn about the financial data industry and build your sales foundation. The team in the New York City office is pretty motivated.
Cons: Career growth for SDR roles can feel pretty limited after a certain point. It's tough to get promoted internally to an Account Executive role without a really long wait or having to jump through a lot of hoops. There's not much upward mobility if you're looking to quickly move up within the sales org.
Advice to Management: Create clearer paths for SDRs to advance into AE roles, perhaps with more mentorship or a structured internal promotion program. Reduce the perceived bottleneck for growth.

Work-life balance depends on your team
Pros: I've had some really good projects building out new features for the fintech software. There's a decent amount of autonomy if you're a performing engineer. My specific team tried to keep things reasonable, mostly 40-45 hour weeks.
Cons: Work-life balance here isn't consistent across the board. Some teams definitely had late nights and weekend work, especially closer to big releases. The pressure to deliver for the market intelligence platform can get intense for product teams.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize expectations around work hours across different engineering and product teams. It would help a lot with burnout and retaining good people.

Leadership Mixes Good with the Tough
Pros: Some of the engineering directors are really supportive. They genuinely understand the technical challenges involved in building our AI-driven market intelligence platform. The hybrid work model helps balance things out, especially for those in the New York City office.
Cons: Higher-level leadership often makes decisions that feel pretty removed from the daily grind of a Senior Software Engineer. It's hard to get clear answers or see the 'why' behind big strategic moves, which gets frustrating.
Advice to Management: Focus on clearer, top-down communication. Involve engineering leads more in strategic planning for our AI-driven products so decisions feel less arbitrary to the teams implementing them.
