Key Responsibilities
Database Administration & Operations
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain database platforms including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
- Manage database environments across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud infrastructures.
- Monitor database performance, health, capacity, and availability, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
- Implement and maintain database monitoring, alerting, and reporting solutions.
- Perform database refreshes, patching, and version upgrades in accordance with change management procedures.
Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity
- Design, implement, and test backup and recovery strategies to meet business Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).
- Maintain and regularly test database disaster recovery (DR) plans and runbooks.
- Ensure backup schedules, retention policies, and restoration procedures comply with regulatory and audit requirements.
- Support and administer High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions, including SQL Server Always On Availability Groups (AG) and Multi-AZ deployments.
Performance Tuning & Query Optimisation
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, long-running queries, deadlocks, index fragmentation, and execution plan inefficiencies.
- Recommend and implement database performance improvements.
- Collaborate with application development teams to optimise SQL code, stored procedures, and database access patterns.
- Establish and maintain indexing strategies, statistics management, and performance baselines.
Security, Compliance & Access Management
- Implement and enforce database security controls, role-based access, and least-privilege principles.
- Manage database encryption technologies, including Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and column-level encryption.
- Ensure compliance with BNM RMiT, PCI-DSS, PDPA, ISO 27001, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Conduct periodic access reviews and maintain audit trails and database activity monitoring.
Incident Management & Production Support
- Act as the L2/L3 escalation point for database-related incidents.
- Participate in on-call support and respond to critical production issues within agreed SLAs.
- Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain accurate incident records, change documentation, and knowledge base articles.
Cloud Database Management
- Manage cloud database services hosted on Huawei Cloud and AWS RDS.
- Support database migration and modernisation initiatives.
- Optimise database infrastructure costs through right-sizing and lifecycle management.
- Implement cloud-native backup, scaling, and high-availability configurations.
Governance & Collaboration
- Maintain database asset inventories, documentation, and dependency mappings.
- Develop and enforce database standards, governance policies, and best practices.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior team members.
- Participate in project planning, capacity planning, and technical review sessions.
- Prepare management reports on database health, availability, risks, and improvement initiatives.
Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 5–7 years of hands-on Database Administration (DBA) experience.
- Experience managing enterprise database environments in financial services, banking, insurance, or other regulated industries.
Technical Skills
- Strong experience administering Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL databases.
- Hands-on experience with AWS RDS, Huawei Cloud database services, and Azure SQL Database (preferred).
- Strong knowledge of backup and recovery, database performance tuning, High Availability (HA), Disaster Recovery (DR), and database security.
- Experience with SQL Server Always On Availability Groups.
- Familiarity with database monitoring and automation tools.
- Understanding of PCI-DSS, PDPA, and ISO 27001 standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Good communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong documentation and reporting capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience within Insurance, Banking, or Financial Services industries.
- Relevant database or cloud certifications (Microsoft, Oracle, PostgreSQL, AWS, or Azure).
- Experience with scripting and automation using PowerShell, Python, or Shell scripting.
