Job Description
As a Supervisor - Import, you will be responsible for overseeing the process of bringing goods and materials into a country, ensuring compliance with customs regulations and optimizing supply chain. You will supervise import operations, manage freight forwarder and customs brokerage providers, and contribute to process improvement. You will orchestrate efficient transportation and distribution strategies, managing relationships with suppliers and freight forwarders, and mitigating risks related to international shipping.
Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end import process, from supplier engagement to final delivery and customs clearance.
- Prepare and verify all necessary import documents, coordinate with customs brokers and freight forwarders, and oversee the logistics to ensure smooth and timely import processes.
- Lead the import team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence to meet performance and productivity standards.
- Collaborate with internal departments (procurement, finance, sales) and external partners (suppliers, freight forwarders, government agencies) to ensure seamless operations.
- Monitor and analyze import data and performance indicators to identify trends, compliance issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Control and monitor import costs, including those related to shipping, customs, and demurrage.
- Act as a contact for customs authorities and regulatory agencies.
- Prepare reports and presentations for senior management.
- Evaluate and select new logistics providers and technologies.
- Lead and participate in cross-functional global supply chain projects.
- Standardize and maintain inventory attributes for purchasing and inventory systems and databases.
- Monitor and utilize reports, inventory applications and processes to achieve and exceed expectations of fill rate and on-time delivery objectives.
- Create, implement, and execute inventory optimization plans and programs to achieve working capital objectives for asset management.
- Rationalize and standardize supplier base within assigned locations to increase preferred supplier utilization and increase purchasing leverage.
- Review on-time deliveries, supplier fill rates, and error reports to evaluate supplier performance.
- Work to obtain improved performance from suppliers as warranted.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree - Supply Chain, International Commerce, Business or a related field or equivalent level of education and experience required
- Masters Degree preferred
- Licenses/Certificates/Designations - APICS or ISM, Lean: Blue, White, or Yellow Belt preferred
- 5 years required of increasing responsibility in import management
- 3 years required of supervisory or leadership experience
- Knowledge of commonly used purchasing and import concepts, practices, and procedures
- Strong interpersonal skills to demonstrate teamwork, leadership and flexibility while working with all levels of the organization. Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to ensure completion
- Strong analytical, and computer skills
- Strong time management skills
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and find solutions
- Ability to explain and supply chain policies, procedures, and practices
- Ability to travel 0% - 25%
