Leadership is Inconsistent for Big Tech

Working at Cisco has its ups and downs, especially with leadership. While some direct managers are great, the higher-ups sometimes miss the mark on vision and execution. It's a typical big tech environment.


Pros

Some of the direct managers, especially in our San Jose office, are really solid. They back their teams and understand the technical challenges. As a software engineer in the networking industry, it's good to have that support.


Cons

The problem is, good leadership isn't consistent across the board. Upper management can feel disconnected from daily work, leading to slow decisions. There's a lot of corporate bureaucracy that just slows everything down.


Advice to Management

Management really needs to improve communication and empower teams more. Cut down on the red tape so engineering teams can actually ship faster. Listen to the folks on the ground.

Solid job security if you're a good performer
Pros: It's a huge corporate company, so job security in the networking industry is decent here. They really try to find new roles internally if your project gets cut. As a Software Engineer, I felt pretty safe most of the time in the San Jose, CA office.
Cons: Layoffs do happen, even if they're not huge across the board. Sometimes you just feel like a small cog in a really big machine. The hybrid model means less face-time for some of us.
Advice to Management: Keep focusing on internal mobility and clear communication during reorganizations. It really helps people feel more secure when things change.

Work-life balance is a real mixed bag
Pros: The remote work options are solid, especially for hybrid employees in the San Jose office. You get decent PTO and it's generally respected if you plan ahead for vacations. It helps maintain some personal time.
Cons: As a Software Engineer, the project demands can really eat into personal time. Sometimes you're pushing 50-60 hour weeks to meet deadlines in network security. It's tough when new initiatives constantly pop up without adequate staffing.
Advice to Management: Try to manage project scope better for engineering teams. Don't let deadlines constantly push people to burnout. Value employees' personal time more by setting realistic expectations for workloads.

Solid big tech job, culture is okay
Pros: I liked the stability and the people I worked with directly in the San Jose office. There's good knowledge sharing, especially for new hires in networking. The hybrid work setup is pretty flexible too.
Cons: The corporate culture can be a bit slow moving. It's a big tech company, so decision-making takes time. Sometimes the internal tools are a mess, which slows down development for us in enterprise software roles.
