Good for starting out, then career growth stalls

Gamuda is a major player in the construction industry, and it's a solid place to kick off your career. You'll definitely gain valuable experience on big projects. But be aware, the opportunities for significant career growth tend to dry up after your first few years.

Pros

You get really good exposure to huge infrastructure projects here, especially as a Project Engineer. It's a big corporate environment, so there's solid initial training and you learn a lot quickly.

Cons

After a few years, career growth just really slows down. It's tough to get promoted beyond mid-level engineering roles, especially in the Kuala Lumpur office. The path upwards isn't very clear.

Advice to Management

Management needs to really think about clearer career paths for experienced employees. It feels like there's a bottleneck for promotions, especially in key engineering roles.

Career growth is okay, depends on projects
Pros: You get to work on really big infrastructure projects which looks good on a resume. There are some internal training programs if you seek them out, which helped me as a Project Engineer. Solid exposure to different aspects of the construction industry.
Cons: Career growth isn't always clear-cut; it often depends on project availability and manager favoritism. Promotions can feel slow, especially for mid-level engineering roles. Sometimes you're just waiting for a senior spot to open up.
Advice to Management: Streamline the promotion process. Create clearer career paths for engineering roles so people know what to aim for. Invest more in mentorship.

Decent flexibility for some engineering roles
Pros: They do offer some hybrid options, which is good. For certain engineering roles, you can sometimes work from home a couple of days a week. It's helpful when you don't need to be physically at the Kuala Lumpur office.
Cons: Realistically, for most of us in construction projects, full remote work isn't an option. There's often pressure to be onsite, making true work flexibility hard. It can be tough to juggle personal appointments with strict project timelines.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize WFH policies more across different departments, even for site-based engineering roles where possible. Give teams more autonomy to decide schedules.
