Leadership has some good points, but needs work.

My time as a Software Engineer at DayOne was a mixed bag. The engineering team is solid, but leadership sometimes misses the mark.


Pros

I really liked my immediate team and the other software engineers. We got a lot done and helped each other out. Being part of an early-stage fintech startup in the San Francisco office was exciting.


Cons

Upper management changes direction way too often. It's tough to build a stable product when priorities shift constantly. This really impacted productivity for engineers.


Advice to Management

Try to set a clear vision and stick to it for more than a few months. Consistent leadership would really help the engineering teams focus.

Okay flexibility for a fast-paced tech startup
Pros: As a Software Engineer, the hybrid model here is actually pretty good. We only need to be in the San Francisco office three days a week. That's decent for a growth-stage tech startup.
Cons: But sometimes those in-office days feel mandatory, even when there's no real reason to be there. It's tough to adjust schedules if something comes up, which kind of defeats the purpose of 'flexibility'. You can't really change which days you come in without a fuss.
Advice to Management: Leadership should revisit the hybrid work policy. It'd be great if we had more control over which days we come into the office, making actual work flexibility better for Software Engineer roles.

Solid place to learn, but career growth is on you
Pros: You learn a ton pretty fast here, especially as a Junior Software Engineer. We get to touch a lot of different parts of the tech stack in the San Francisco office, which is great for foundational experience in a SaaS startup. It's a fast-paced environment.
Cons: There isn't much structured career growth though. You really have to seek out mentors yourself, and promotion paths aren't super clear, especially for entry-level roles. It feels like you're on your own to figure out what's next.
Advice to Management: Management should really consider implementing more structured mentorship programs and clearer guidelines for career progression, especially for early-career folks. It'd help a lot with retention and overall team development.

Decent Culture, But Growing Pains Are Real
Pros: I've met some really good colleagues here. Everyone in the San Francisco office tries to be supportive. The hybrid model is pretty solid, offering decent work flexibility.
Cons: The company culture feels a bit shaky right now. There's been too much turnover, which isn't great for a fast-growing startup. It makes it hard to feel secure.
Advice to Management: Leadership needs to focus on retaining talent. Try to provide more clarity on company direction and career paths for tech roles.
