Okay for starting out, but growth is slow

I spent a few years at OCBC as an Associate in Singapore. It was a good place to start my career and learn the ropes of the banking industry, but I found opportunities for upward mobility quite limited after a certain point. The hybrid work setup was a plus.

Pros

You learn a lot early on, especially as an Associate in this corporate banking environment. They have some decent internal training programs if you seek them out, which is good for skills development. It's a big bank, so there are many departments.

Cons

Career progression can feel pretty stagnant after a couple of years. It's tough to move up without changing teams, and even then, internal mobility for junior roles isn't always smooth. Pay raises don't always match the effort for a finance job.

Advice to Management

OCBC leadership should really look into clearer career paths for junior and mid-level employees. Make internal transfers smoother; it would help retain talent in this competitive finance sector.

Slow Growth, Solid Bank Experience
Pros: You'll learn a ton about the financial services sector here. It's a big bank, so there's always some new project or technology to get involved with. Good for foundational experience.
Cons: Career progression for an Associate Software Engineer can feel really slow in Singapore. Sometimes it seems like promotions only open up when someone else leaves the team. Not much room for quick upward movement.
Advice to Management: Please look into speeding up career tracks for junior tech roles. More clear paths for growth would really help retain talent.

Leadership at OCBC is pretty inconsistent
Pros: As a Relationship Manager, you learn a ton about the banking industry. It's a solid corporate environment with good training when you start. The team in the Singapore office is generally supportive.
Cons: Senior leadership often feels out of touch with what we do daily. There's not much room for independent decision-making from mid-level managers. This makes it tough to adapt quickly to client needs for those of us working onsite.
Advice to Management: Empower mid-level managers more. Get senior leaders more involved with front-line teams. It'd really help with morale and efficiency.

Leadership is pretty inconsistent here
Pros: Some team leads are genuinely supportive, which is great for a Relationship Manager. They actually help you navigate client issues and understand the bank's products. It's a solid corporate environment with decent benefits.
Cons: But then you get managers who just micromanage everything. There's a lot of pressure from senior leadership for sales targets in this financial services industry. Doesn't really foster new ideas or a good work-life balance.
Advice to Management: Senior leadership needs to ensure more consistent management training. Micro-management really kills morale and innovation, especially for client-facing roles. Empower your Relationship Managers more.
