Leadership has some good points, but needs work

Working at Vontier as a Software Engineer has been an interesting ride. There are some decent things about being remote, but leadership definitely needs to step up its game, especially for us in industrial tech.


Pros

You get a lot of autonomy as a remote Software Engineer here, which is great. Some project managers are genuinely supportive, letting you run with things. The pay and benefits package is pretty solid for a corporate environment.


Cons

My biggest issue is leadership. It feels like senior management is often out of touch with the reality of software development, especially for those of us working on industrial tech solutions. Communication about company strategy is pretty inconsistent, making career growth feel uncertain.


Advice to Management

Try to get more input from individual contributors, especially in software development, before making big strategic calls. Improve communication channels and provide clearer roadmaps for career progression.

Standard Benefits, Pay Needs Improvement
Pros: The healthcare benefits are solid here, which is a big plus. As an Engineering Project Manager, I didn't have to worry about coverage for my family. The 401k match is also decent, pretty much what you'd expect from an established industrial technology firm.
Cons: The salary for my role in the Raleigh, NC office felt a bit low when I looked at similar positions. It's tough to negotiate a higher base. Also, annual bonuses and raises aren't great; I've seen better compensation in other industrial tech companies.
Advice to Management: Review the compensation strategy, especially for critical roles like Engineering Project Managers. Being more competitive with salaries would really help attract and retain top talent in the industrial tech sector, especially in competitive markets like Raleigh.

Decent Flexibility, But Depends on Your Team
Pros: Some managers really get the hybrid model, which was nice for me as a Software Engineer. I could work remote from Dallas, TX most days. It's solid for a large corporate environment in industrial technology.
Cons: It's not consistent across the board though. My team had required onsite days sometimes, which made planning tough. There's definitely room for more universal work-from-home policies.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize remote work policies more. It would really help with employee morale and retention, especially for the tech roles.

Okay flexibility for engineers, but has limits.
Pros: Working remote as a Software Engineer here is decent. They give you the tools you need to WFH effectively, and daily stand-ups are fine. There's an effort for work-life balance, like not bugging you after hours too much.
Cons: True flexibility can be tough. Even though it's remote, they push for hybrid office days in the Dallas office sometimes for 'collaboration' that often feels unnecessary. It feels like different teams have different rules for remote work, which creates inconsistency for industrial tech roles.
Advice to Management: Be more transparent and consistent with remote and hybrid policies across all engineering teams. It helps for planning and managing expectations, especially for those of us remote from cities like Dallas.
