Field Service Engineer

Pay's okay, but benefits could be better.

Mindray is a decent place to work within the healthcare technology sector. As a Field Service Engineer, I found the pay to be pretty standard for the medical device industry, but the overall benefits package definitely leaves a lot to be desired. It's a solid mid-sized company with its pros and cons.

Pros

The base salary for Field Service Engineer roles is pretty competitive in the Northeast region. I've seen worse, honestly. Plus, some of the commission structures for sales roles seem solid.

Cons

Healthcare benefits aren't the best; high deductibles really hit you hard. And the 401k match is pretty weak for a corporate company of this size, it's not really helping long-term savings much. Don't expect stock options.

Advice to Management

Seriously look into improving the healthcare plans and increasing the 401k match. It'd make a big difference in retaining talent, especially for technical roles like ours in the medical device industry.

Pay is okay, benefits are decent
Pros: The health insurance package for medical devices employees is pretty solid. Dental and vision coverage are good too, which is a plus. They do offer a 401k match, which is something.
Cons: Compensation for a Field Service Engineer in the Mahwah, NJ office feels a bit low for the industry. There isn't much transparency on pay bands, which makes negotiating tough. Base salary could definitely be better, especially with current inflation.
Advice to Management: Really look at the competitive landscape for salaries, especially for technical roles. Transparency around pay scales would help a lot with employee retention.

Decent pay, but long hours for field roles.
Pros: The pay and benefits are solid for the medical devices industry. There's good job security too, which is a plus for a big corporate company. You can sometimes shift your schedule for client visits.
Cons: Work-life balance is tough, especially for field roles. I often worked 50-60 hour weeks. It's hard to truly disconnect when you're a Clinical Application Specialist, even working hybrid from the Mahwah, NJ office.
Advice to Management: Really look at the workload for field employees. Encourage disconnecting after hours, especially for those in healthcare technology.

Okay for engineers, culture could use work
Pros: The training on Mindray's diagnostic imaging systems is pretty solid. It's great if you're looking to get into the medical device industry. My team in the Seattle territory was supportive, and we collaborated well on tough service calls.
Cons: The corporate culture feels very top-down. Recognition for our efforts as Field Service Engineers isn't always there. It's tough to get new ideas heard, and it often feels like you're just a number, not a valued contributor.
Advice to Management: Listen more to the people on the ground, especially those in onsite field service. Recognize individual contributions beyond just hitting metrics to improve morale and foster a more open corporate environment.
